 | Hi, and welcome to Mr. Quinn's Class dot com. That's me in the picture. The bald one.I am a teacher at Noble High School in North Berwick,
Maine. I'm teaching sophomore algebra and geometry as well as a section of statistics this year. This page is intended to be a central place for access to information that might
be useful to students and parents, with news, assignments, and other class-related content. Links are to the right, news is below. Enjoy! |

The year is really rolling along nicely. I think that we've hit a nice rhythm in all classes, in particular statistics where we're turning our attention to the data gathering for our year-long analysis project of the Noble community. This week, we will be talking a little about what you can do with a large set of qualitative data, getting sampling plans approved, and gathering data.
In algebra, we'll be talking about absolute values, inequalities, and how the two ideas can be combined. It's a good week, all around.
Re: making up missed standards, things are quite a bit different than last year as a result of decisions made at the school board and administrative level. I'm taking things on an individual basis -- if you have a good reason for underperforming and can convince me that you've fixed the problem, I'm happy to talk about re-assessing your skills. Please see me early if this is the case. Obviously, I have less time after school as a result of the school day running earlier, but if you're willing to work to fill in the blanks, I'm happy to provide the opportunity.

Algebra sort of switched things up -- we'll be getting to those scatterplots this week, as well as some graphing and some discussion of how parallel and perpendicular lines manifest in the equations that describe them.
Stats will finish the dryest part of the course when it looks at types of data, and will start our data-gathering project on wednesday -- after an assessment.

This week, algebra will start looking at related variables, and in particular linear relations between variables. We'll approach the topic by way of an intuitive look at ways to quantify change, and get more abstract from there.
Statistics will consider bias, and methods for avoiding it. This is a profoundly important topic, and one that usually gets taught with a few subtle omissions and occasionally with outright conceptual errors. This is a dangerous business we're in, but I'll do my best to avoid these pitfalls.
