5 - 7 September 2007: Welcome Back
Monday, August 27, 2007
This week we'll concentrate on policies and procedures, and start talking about some basic ideas related to our topics. Don't get fooled: I like to begin slowly, but we'll pick up speed over the next 4 to 6 classes.
As should be the case for every single teacher every single year, I'm committed to improving how I do things. This year, I'm concentrating on:
- Better serving students who need a challenge. I've spent time this summer building some challenging activities, and will be working to integrate those and other extensions of content into our coursework.
- Making the classroom an instrument for the organization of content ideas and student feedback. My classrooms have always been a little eclectic in terms of what's on the walls. This year, I'm going to work to make sure that the environment supports learning as much as possible.
- Increasing my own mathematical expertise. I was admitted this summer to the PhD program in statistics at USM, because I like stats, and because i think that math teachers should be mathematicians first and teachers second.
The Powerpoints for the week are below, please feel free to take a look. Nothing makes me happier than checking in and finding that people are downloading these to help prepare for or reinforce our work in class.
Here we go again!
